During this one-hour presentation, we will define obesity as a systemic disease. We will discuss the change and the morphology of the adipocyte and how it contributes to the inflammatory response. We will discuss the epidemiology of the obesity epidemic and the social, cultural, and environmental factors related to obesity.
This presentation will outline the contributors to obesity and help the clinician identify effective treatments necessary to address the underlying causes. We will discuss the comorbities associated with obesity and the physiological challenges of weight maintenance over time.
Long-term strategies for weight loss and maintenance will be presented, including ketosis and the ketogenic diet. Also, the critical role the microbiome plays in promoting fat accumulation. Finally, we will review the importance of the appropriate language (Lexicon) when counseling the obese patient.
